David was assigned to Charlie Troop on April 2, 1969 and he was Killed in Action on October 19, 1970. David’s best friend in Vietnam, Rae Bailey, was Killed in action the day before David. David did not have to go out on the helicopter because he only had a short time before he would go home. David said that Rae’s family would want Rae sent home. He went out to look for him. For his bravery in Vietnam, David was awarded the following: Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal ( 11 awards 12th time for Heroism, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and a set of Flight members Wings. David was an Observer on an OH-6A Light Observation Helicopter.
