Richard was assigned to Charlie Troop on January 20, 1966 and was Killed in Action on August 8, 1966. Richard was a Pilot of an UH-1B helicopter. Richard was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a set of Army Aviator Wings.
If any family member or friend reads this blog, please contact me as I am looking for personal stories about this man.
Lt Meehan was assigned to my gun ship 62-1882 with Wo Leo Henry as new guy pilot trainer. He was a great person!! Not the norm for a young officer. He in turn was chosen to be our new COs ( Maj Simons) pilot. Died along with Maj Simons, Leslie Nichols and gunner unknown to me Aug 8th 1966. Another sad day for C Trp.

I just found this site. My name is Dave Dahmen. I worked with Richard at the California
Department of Water Resources in the summer of 1964. Rich worked there until he went
to Vietnam. We became good friends through our love of the outdoors. We went on a couple of mountain climbing trips… August 1 1964 we climbed Mt Lyle.. the highest peak in Yosemite Nat’l Park. Another challenge..We wanted to go from the highest point to the lowest point in the lower 48 ( Mt Whitney, about 15000 ft., to Badwater Basin in Death Valley at minus 282′ below sea level ) all in one day. So on August 15th 1964 we started up the Mt. Whitney trail at 5 am. We reached our destination in Death Valley at 10:15 pm that night, where the temperature was 114 degrees. Richard was a friend I will never forget.

Amanda, My name is John Youse Crew chief. Lt Meehan Was assigned to my gun ship 62-1882 for evaluation by Warrant Officer Leo Henry instructor pilot. Best I can recall he flew with us for about 3 months . He was a very good pilot , cool under fire and one fine person. He would not have been chosen to be Trp. Commander Maj. Simmons pilot if he wasn’t top notch. The loss of Lt. Meehan and Leslie Nichols (roommate) hit me harder than any other event in my tour there. Dec. 65-Dec.66 We lost some fine friends!!!! Please feel free to contact me . John.youse@netzero.com

John,
Thank you for responding to Amanda. If you have a good story to tell about a mission thay the two of you might have been on that would be great. Give her an example of why you thought he was cool inder fire. Did he like to tell jokes? Was he serious all of the time? Did he ever talk about his family?
You can give der insight into what he was really like more than anyone I know. I can not find any family members.
Once again, Thank you.

Joanne, I am sorry but Amanda had to turn in her research last May. I help many HS students who do research on our Vietnam Veterans. If you happen to have a picture or two of Dick that you could scan and forward to me I would appreciate it. I would also like a story as well. I try to show the human side of the man as well as the military side. You can send the pictures to pcbnamin@verizon.net. The same with the story.
Thank you,
Pat
