Charles or David as he was known by was assigned to Charlie Troop on May 9, 1968 and was Killed in Action on August 16, 1968. I served with David. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for all. The picture is of David and Colonel Charles Sonnkalb Sr. as David’s dad swore him into the Army. David was a Pilot of an OH-6A Observation helicopter. David was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a set of Army Aviator Wings.
If any family member or friend reads this blog, please contact me as I am looking for personal stories about this brave man.

Steve, I served with your brother. I am very proud of that fact. He was a friendly person and as brave a man as I ever knew. What I am looking for are photos of David growing up. With Family. I am also looking for a story or two about him from your perspective. I can tell the world about him when it comes to being a soldier but I can not express what kind of a human being he was. I want the world to know that he is much more than just a soldier and a name on the Wall. By the way, we will be holding a reunion the 29,30th of September and the 1st of October when, as always, we will be reading his name off as part of a ceremony we hold at every reunion to Honor all of our Fallen Brothers. Maybe you could attend. We normally have around 5 Gold Star Family Members attending but I believe this year we will have 7-10. It will be held in Branson, Missouri. If it is okay with you, I would like to add your email address to a list I use to send out an Monthly News Letter to my fellow Troopers and the Gold Star Family Members.
